Hugary's favorite street food!

Lángos [pronounced, lon-gosh] is deep-fried yeasted flatbread eaten with a variety of garnishes like sour cream and dill or cheese and ham. Made fresh and served warm, it’s Hungary’s most beloved street food. Keeping with Hungarian custom, our langós is brushed with garlic water and sour cream, sprinkled with fresh dill, topped with Hickory Smoked Ham, Marieke 1-year Gouda cheese, and a dusting of paprika! We make it fresh for lunch on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11:30 AM to 1:30PM.

Sometimes called Hungarian pizza, langós is made and sold today in Hungary at food markets, street fairs and public events year round. It’s common to see people standing at counters eating the hot flatbread mounded with an amazing combination of meat, cheese, and vegetables. Some langós flatbread dough is very simple: water, flour, salt, and yeast. A slightly more elaborate version includes mashed potatoes and sometimes even chopped cabbage. Our dough is made with potatoes.

Introduced centuries ago by the Ottoman Turks (rulers of Hungary from 1453 to 1699), lángos didn’t start out as a fried flatbread sold on the street or at public venues. Originally, it was baked and eaten at breakfast time on bread-making day in Hungarian homes. The bread dough was mixed, a fire was started in the wood-fired oven and then small pieces of the proofing dough were baked near the flames. This is how langós derived its name; lang means “flame” in Hungarian. It was a morning treat to sustain home bakers, and probably their children, while the day’s bread baking ensued. It’s been a long time since most Hungarians baked their own bread regularly, and as that tradition faded, langós evolved into a flatbread deep fried in oil rather than baked before an open flame. In Hungary and here at the Bakehouse, expect to eat langós soon after it’s deep fried. At most langós stands in Hungary you’ll have a choice of many toppings plus the opportunity to brush your warm dough with garlic water.
