“I love you.” “I know.”Posted on
Anyone know what movie that quote is from (without scrolling down)? I’ll give you a hint—it’s a “boy” sci-fi movie and has to do with a surprise groom’s cake! But let’s start by meeting our couple, Vila and Zac. Married in early May, they held their wedding reception at Vinology Restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor in their beautiful, basement banquet rooms, affectionately called the “Vine Room” and the “Bubble Room”—you’ll see why later.
Like many brides, when Vila came in for her consultation she had quite a few cakes that she had pinned on a Pinterest page. This gave Katie a great jumping off point. This white, ruffled cake has definitely been around on the Internet for awhile now but it was a cake that Vila loved so we went with it. Katie found her inspiration from the ruffled flower on the white cake and ended up designing a table of cakes using the flower and coordinating colors of ivory, coral, and peach. The ruffles then continued into the cake stands that Vila bought to show off her beautiful cakes!
To go with the main cake, Katie designed the second cake to have upward, more “extreme” ruffles in the coral color with a peach flower. The third cake, on the opposite spectrum was softer with no actual ruffle but a larger, more dominant coral ruffled flower. All of the cakes were then airbrushed with an ivory luster for that glowing sheen. And their flavors…yum! The tiered cake were both buttermilk cake, one with mocha hazelnut buttercream and the other with raspberry preserves. The two side cakes were chocolate cake with raspberry preserves and raspberry buttercream, and almond pound cake with cherry buttercream.
One of my favorite things when seeing pictures from wedding photographers is when the bride is visibly timid to cut their beautiful wedding cake just like Vila in the left photo. Thankfully it looks like Zac helped her out and they got their ceremonial serving!
So back to the “I love you.” “ I know.” Anyone guess? Drumroll please…the answer is Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back! As I said earlier, Vila ordered this cake to be a surprise groom’s cake—and those are some of our favorites! But the situation always beg the questions: why and what does it mean?
So I posed this question to Vila and she told me the story of how when she and Zac first started dating, and somehow the topic of Star Wars came up, he told her that he thought the movies were okay, but that’s it. It wasn’t until much later in their relationship when he said, “I’m not gonna lie, I love those movies!” And, she added, if a Star Wars Convention were around, he would totally go! So now, often, when she says, “I love you,” he responds with “I know.” Which if you’re not familiar with the movie this happens right before Hans Solo is about to be frozen so Princess Leia admits “I love you” and like the tough guy that Solo is, his response is just “I know.”
This cake had everything a Star Wars themed groom’s cake would need including the quote; blue versus red lightsabers (a.k.a. good versus evil); a galaxy sky; the ever important Death Star; and of course, in honor of the quote, a bride and groom Hans Solo and Princess Leia. Ellen made these little figurines out of gumpaste and painted on their little faces. They were then embellished with a lacy veil for her, and a boutonniere for him. And since this cake was for Zac, Vila picked his favorite flavor: coconut cake with rum buttercream and fresh lemon curd fillings!
Earlier I mentioned Vinology’s uniquely named banquet rooms. Here’s why: the “Bubble Room” has hundreds of glass balls that hang from the ceiling and glow beautifully. Take a look at some of these beautiful photos depicting the rest of their wedding.
Congratulations Vila and Zac and thank you for letting us be a part of your wedding! And thank you George Street Photography for the lovely photos.
