We are the Zingerman’s Bakehouse Cake Studio, affectionally known as “The Cake Crew.”  We are in charge of icing and decorating all custom cakes, wholesale cakes, cupcakes, and decorated sugar cookies as well as doing all bridal/celebration consultations.

Our backgrounds range from bachelors degrees in communication, interior design, sculpture, hotel and restaurant management, and advertising but we all found ourselves with baking and pastry certificates and as cake decorators.  One of the most valuable parts of working in and with this team is that we all have different strengths and while we all learn from each other, the person with the right strength will work on your cake.

Stephanie Gasinski
Studio Manager

Stephanie, originally from Canton, studied Hospitality at Madonna University and Baking and Business at Schoolcraft College.  She started working at the Bakehouse in 2005, first as a bread baker but then moved to the cake studio where she has found her home.  Her favorite cake we make is the apple butter spice cake with caramel buttercream.

Emily Grish
Emily, born and raised in Ann Arbor, got a degree in Mass Communications from Boston University before returning to Michigan and earning a certificate in Baking & Pastry from Washtenaw Community College.  She came to the cake studio in 2008 after working as an assistant pastry chef in downtown Ann Arbor.  Her favorite cake we make is the buttermilk cake with lemon buttercream.

Katie Robinson
Katie, from “Down River,” studied Interior Design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Sculpture at Wayne State University, and Baking & Pastry from Washtenaw Community College.  Katie joined the cake studio in 2010.  She has a deep passion for furthering all of our knowledge and education in the cake decorating field and we’ve all learned more with her efforts.  Her favorite cake we make is the almond pound cake.

Ellen Tondreau
Ellen comes to us from Saline via Michigan State University where she majored in Telecommunications.  Ellen’s first job out of college was baking and decorating cupcakes.  Although not expecting it become a career, she found a love for the world of decorating and came to Zingerman’s Bakehouse in 2012 to further that love and knowledge.  Her favorite cake we make is the hummingbird cake.

Alyce Basak
Alyce, originally from Kalamazoo, first studied Music Performance at the University of Michigan.  Realizing that it was baking that she truly enjoyed, Alyce switched to Washtenaw Community College where she graduated with an Associates in Baking and Pastry Arts.  She came to the cake studio in 2014 with years of baking and catering experience under her belt.  Her favorite cake we make is the buttermilk cake, with any buttercream because it’s so versatile.

Emily Schinske
Emily grew up in Ann Arbor, pretty much in her family’s bakery–she considers herself “home schooled” in baking.  Leaving the culinary world for awhile, Emily studied Early Childhood Development at Eastern Michigan University.  But like the rest of us, Emily’s creativity won over and fell into a desire to decorate cakes.  After previously working at two other bakeries in Ann Arbor, Emily came to Zingerman’s Bakehouse to work in our BAKE! school before moving to our cake studio.  Her favorite cake we make is almond pound cake, as it pairs wonderfully with a cup of earl grey tea.
