Wow it’s been quite a week at the Bakehouse. Our bread bakery and pastry kitchen were bustling away making thousands of loaves of breads and pies and so much more. While we in the cake studio cannot make that much in a day, we certainly had our fair share of cake makin’. Our two biggest days are generally the 22nd and 23rd of December and this year did not disappoint. In fact, on the 23rd we decorated a record 163 cakes, and that doesn’t even include the nearly 125 cookies and dozens of cupcakes…and yes…we keep track of these things!
Every year we create a special winter cake and cookie for the month of December and this time we think we nailed it. We created a tasty cake we called the “Merry Mint” cake that was chocolate cake filled with a rich chocolate mint buttercream and then iced in vanilla buttercream. We then coated half of the side with crushed peppermint for a yummy crunch and then we made hundreds of fondant candy canes to go on top. For our cookies we made an adorable little snowman face all ready to go with a blue hat and a carrot nose. And let’s not forget our traditional buche de noel cake—the delicious walnut rum filled chiffon roll iced and decorated in chocolate buttercream.
Please enjoy some photos to get a sneak peek at what working in the cake studio is like during the holidays:
All in all, in those two days, we decorated about 155 buche de noel cakes, over 60 merry mint cakes, almost 200 snowman cookies, and countless other “everyday” cakes for our wholesale customers. But the busy-ness does not end with Christmas for our cake studio. As is getting more customary, we have 2 large wedding cakes going out tonight for New Year’s Eve weddings as well as 1400 cookies for the NHL’s Winter Classic game on New Year’s Day, held in the University of Michigan’s Big House stadium. In addition to all of that, we have 3 more wedding cakes to make for this weekend. The fun never stops and we love it!
Happy Holidays to everyone and here’s to a very happy 2014!
