Bread of the Month!

Farm Bread

A French country loaf with a slight sour tang. We like the flavor of this bread best with an extra dark crust.

$4.50/loaf this month (reg. $6.25)

Cake of the Month!

Carrot Cake

We peel and grate forty pounds of carrots to make one batch of this cake. All those carrots add an incredible moistness and a fresh sweetness to the cake. Combine them with toasted walnuts and aromatic spices and you get a great cake that’s totally delicious on its own. Cover it with a generous amount of cream cheese frosting and it becomes irresistible. Available in 6″ and 9″ rounds and sheet cakes.

20% off carrot cakes and slices this month!

New Pastries!

Pucker up for a pumpkin party!

They’re back! Pumpkin pie made with local Guernsey cream, pumpkin muffins with toasted walnuts, pumpkin cheesecake made with cream cheese from our neighbor Zingerman’s Creamery and a ginger jump up cookie crust, and Pumpkin patch stuffed cupcakes. So celebrate the feeling of fall and cuddle up to our pumpkin pastries!

Sugar Crisp Muffins

Back by popular demand! Sometimes we refer to sugar crisp as “the doughnut of muffins”. Its a moist buttermilk and nutmeg baked muffin that’s brushed in melted butter and rolled in deeply flavorful cinnamon sugar. Come in and ask for a taste!

Saturday Bakehouse Exclusive!

Doughnuts

This month we’re making fresh apple fritters and French crullers. Available only at the Bakehouse, Saturdays at 10 AM.

Time for Challah Turbans and New Year Sweets

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Next week Jewish communities all over the world will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. In Jewish tradition, Rosh Hashanah marks the creation of the world, but when I was a child I always thought it marked the beginning of the school year since they often coincide. (So much for years of Hebrew School.) Regardless of it’s official meaning, I often felt hopeful about a fresh start. Almost 25 years since my last back-to-school day, I still feel just as excited, hopeful and optimistic about our future.

Happy New Year to all of you – Jewish or not, going back to school or not. May this year (whenever it starts in your mind) bring you, your family and your community all that you hope for.  We are glad to able to provide some enjoyment to your life through our daily breads and pastries and our special holiday treats.

This morning we baked the first challah turbans and Moroccan challah braids of the season (October 8th will be the last baking day). Come in and ask for a taste and ponder your new year plans with us. You might also ask for a taste of the richly flavored and complex buckwheat honey cake or a comforting slice of applesauce cake. We’d love to show you our new gift boxes of rugelach and mandelbread too. They are sure to get someone’s new year off to a sweet start.
